How Much Does AI Automation Cost? What Drives the Price for Canadian SMBs

For a few years, the Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP) was the go-to answer when a small business asked, “Is there funding to help us go digital?” Many people are still searching for it. If that’s how you found this page, here’s the short version: CDAP isn’t taking new applications, but it isn’t the only route.
This guide explains what happened to CDAP, where Canadian and Ontario businesses can look for support with AI and digital projects in 2026, and, perhaps most usefully, how to prepare a project so it’s ready for whichever program fits. We’re a web and AI development team in Kitchener, Ontario, not a lender or funding advisor, so treat this as a starting map, not advice. Program rules change often. Always confirm details on the official pages linked here.
No. The Canada Digital Adoption Program, run by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), helped businesses adopt digital technologies. Its main stream, Boost Your Business Technology, is no longer accepting new applications, according to BDC’s CDAP page and a Government of Canada briefing note, and the official CDAP pages on ISED’s website now redirect to ISED’s main site.
If your business already took part in CDAP, confirm anything about your file directly with BDC or ISED. For everyone else, the useful question is what’s available now.
There’s no single one-for-one replacement for CDAP. Instead, there are several programs, each built for a different kind of business and project. Below, each one gets a one-sentence description and a link to its official page. Amounts, eligibility and intake dates change often, so confirm every detail directly with the program before you plan around it.
The Business Development Bank of Canada’s LIFT is a program businesses can explore. Confirm what it covers and whether it fits your business directly with BDC.
The National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP), through its AI Assist initiative, supports small and medium-sized businesses developing and integrating generative AI and deep learning into their products and services. Confirm details directly with NRC IRAP.
FedDev Ontario’s Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative supports AI adoption and commercialization by businesses in southern Ontario. As of October 19, 2026, FedDev’s page says the program is accepting applications, so confirm its current status directly with FedDev Ontario.
The Ontario-supported Digital Competence Centre, delivered by the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI), helps small and medium-sized Ontario businesses plan and adopt digital technologies. As of October 2026, OCI’s program page lists the Digital Modernization and Adoption Plan (planning) stream and the Retail Modernization Project Grant stream as open, while funds last, and the Technology Demonstration Program (implementation) stream as closed. Confirm current status directly with OCI.
The Canada Revenue Agency’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program uses tax incentives to encourage businesses to conduct research and development in Canada. Confirm details directly with the CRA, or with an accountant who works with SR&ED.

Whatever program you approach, a clearly scoped project makes the conversation easier, and it’s worth doing even if you end up self-funding. Here’s what a funding-ready AI project usually has.
“We want to use AI” isn’t a project. “Our team re-types emailed purchase orders into our order system, which causes delays and errors” is. Describe the problem in business terms: what happens today, who does it, and why it matters.
Measure how the process works now: volumes, time spent, error rates and delays. Funders and lenders want to understand the expected improvement, and you’ll need the baseline to judge whether the project worked. Our guide to estimating AI automation costs and ROI walks through this.
What will the solution do, and what won’t it do? Which systems does it connect to? Where does AI fit, and where do simple rules do the job? Which steps keep a person reviewing the output? A short written scope answers these questions.
Separate the build (discovery, integration, testing, training) from the running costs (AI usage, hosting, maintenance). Many programs care about which costs are eligible, so a clear split saves time.
If the project involves personal information, note which services will process it and how it’s protected. Under PIPEDA, Canada’s federal private-sector privacy law, your business remains accountable for personal information it transfers to third parties for processing. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s principles for generative AI are a useful checklist.
Who owns the system, how it will be monitored and maintained, and how success will be measured after the funding period ends.
Program intakes open and close, and approvals take time. Don’t schedule a project around funding you haven’t secured, and check whether a program requires approval before you start spending. Many do.
A technology partner can’t make you eligible for a program or guarantee an outcome. That depends on the program’s rules and your business. What a good partner can do is help you turn an idea into a clear technical scope: what will be built, how it connects to your systems, what it will cost to build and run, and how you’ll know it’s working. That’s useful for any funding conversation, and for deciding whether the project is worth doing at all.

No relaunch has been announced on official channels as of this writing. CDAP’s Boost Your Business Technology stream is no longer accepting new applications, and its official pages are no longer online. If that changes, the announcement will come from ISED.
There are programs worth investigating, including the Ontario-supported Digital Competence Centre and FedDev Ontario’s Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative for southern Ontario. Availability changes, so check each program’s official page for current intakes and eligibility.
Some programs require one and others don’t, but a written plan helps either way. It forces clarity about the problem, the scope, the costs and how you’ll measure results, which is what funders, lenders and your own team will want to see.
Eligibility and applications are handled by each program, so contact it directly. If you’re planning an AI project, we’re happy to talk through the technical side in a free consultation.
